Exchange 2010 Adoption Will Peak In Two Years, Survey Says
Published 10/09 by Exchange Answers
Waltham, MA - Metalogix Software, a provider of email archiving solutions for Microsoft Exchange installations, conducted a survey this summer suggesting that adoption of Exchange 2010, anticipated for general availability next month, will peak in 2011. The survey also revealed that half of Exchange installations are already a version behind, using Exchange 2003.
"Email has become today's No. 1 business application and companies are hesitant to make any changes that might impact its performance," according to Metalogix CEO Chris Risley, who was quoted in the company's announcement about the research. "This has resulted in a relatively slow adoption rate of new versions of Exchange." Other industry observers have called email applications the information circulatory system, or bloodstream, of modern corporations.
Of more than 800 IT administrators surveyed, 50% said they are running E2003, 46% are running E2007 and the remaining handful are on older versions of Exchange. Nearly half of all respondents - 48% - said they plan Exchange upgrades this year, but most will remain one version behind. That's because 52% of the E2003 users plan to upgrade to E2007, not E2010. Twenty percent of all Exchange users said they would upgrade to E2010 when it becomes available.
Based on trend data from the survey, Metalogix said it predicts that the adoption rate of Exchange 2010 will not peak for at least two years. In the meantime, companies can better prepare for the migration - and better protect their information assets - by adopting solutions to securely retain, protect and archive their email data, Metalogix said. Such an approach can even speed the future migration process by reducing Exchange data size before migration.
While true, the statement is a tad self-serving since Metalogix offers a powerful solution for Exchange archiving, Metalogix Professional Archive Manager for Exchange. Available for Exchange 2003 and 2007, Professional Archive Manager for Exchange leverages Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) technology to remove duplicate data and store original files on less-expensive media, the company said. This reduces the amount of data to be backed up, increases backup performance, reduces backup windows and speeds recovery time. It also minimizes the overall data that must be migrated when upgrading to newer versions of Exchange.
In addition to its Exchange products, Metalogix offers as SharePoint migration, management, archiving, and recovery solutions.
Further information about the survey is available on this page of the company's web site, www.metalogix.net. A detailed overview of Metalogix Professional Archive Manager for Exchange is available here.
